Today we will learn about Cubism, its’ avant-garde approach to studying the subjects of artworks, why Hitler banned it, and why one of Picasso’s first proto-Cubist works prompted a journalist to call the style a “hostility against good sense”! We will work with oil paint to study a still life object through a Cubist lens, ending up with our own multi-faceted artworks.

Melting clocks, birds that aren’t birds, strange creatures and landscapes that don’t quite make sense – welcome to the strange, ethereal world of Surrealism! While Dali’s melting clocks may be the most well-known of the surrealist paintings, we will adventure further into this lush, peculiar world of dreams, and the creative practice of what the movement’s intellectual pioneer André Breton called “pure psychic automatism”. We will have a watercolour painting exercise for you to do that will encourage you to push the boundaries of your imagination and create your own surrealist dreamscape!

Before we could document the species of our planet through portable photographs, the vast world of flora and fauna was transcribed into the public mind by the keen eyes and steady hands of artists. The tradition of Scientific Illustration has a fascinating history that is impossible to untangle from humanity’s understanding of science throughout the ages. Come learn about some of the people who laid the foundations for understanding insects, finches, and plants, and try your own hand at some total information drawing using chalk pastels and pens.

Learn the weird and wonderful world of DADA. What is DADA, you ask? Dadaism is an art style and artistic philosophy that emerged in response to the aftermath of World War One. A group of artists and poets formed a collective with the goal of making nonsensical art in response to the feeling that the war (and the world left in its’ wake) was cruelly senseless. It was a subversive art movement, but it still brought a sense of joy and fun to a strange and scary time in history. Come learn more and try your hand at our Dadaist art collage!
