Join MAG Artist Saija Maureen to explore Surrealism on August 9, 2023 at 6:30pm.

Melting clocks, birds that aren’t birds, strange creatures and landscapes that don’t quite make sense – welcome to the strange, ethereal world of Surrealism! While Dali’s melting clocks may be the most well-known of the surrealist paintings, we will adventure further into this lush, peculiar world of dreams, and the creative practice of what the movement’s intellectual pioneer André Breton called “pure psychic automatism”. We will have a watercolour painting exercise for you to do that will encourage you to push the boundaries of your imagination and create your own surrealist dreamscape!

Join MAG Artist Saija Maureen to explore Post-Impressionism on August 2, 2023 at 6:30pm.

Vincent Van Gogh is a nearly world-renowned name in art – but how much do you know about the Post-Impressionist art era and the artists who were his contemporaries? Of course, we will be looking at and talking about the legendary painter himself; how could we not? But we will also dive into the philosophy of Post-Impressionism, and how a handful of artists laid the foundations for an explosion of unique, interpretive art styles. After the presentation, we will be painting a Van Gogh-inspired piece, replete with vibrant colours and deliciously textured brush strokes.

Join MAG Artist Saija Maureen to explore Op Art on July 19, 2023 at 6:30pm.

Who didn’t love looking at optical illusion books as a youngster; having our brains delightfully tickled and twisted by undulating lines, seeing a still image whose non-moving elements somehow trick our brains into seeing a purple dot chasing its’ way through a circle of green squares? Today we’ll explore the surprisingly heartfelt ethos behind the Op Art movement that emerged in popularity in the UK and US during the 1960s, and create our own exciting illusory artworks with acrylic paint!

Join MAG Artist Saija Maureen to explore Dadism on July 12, 2023 at 6:30pm.

Learn the weird and wonderful world of DADA. What is DADA, you ask? Dadaism is an art style and artistic philosophy that emerged in response to the aftermath of World War One. A group of artists and poets formed a collective with the goal of making nonsensical art in response to the feeling that the war (and the world left in its’ wake) was cruelly senseless. It was a subversive art movement, but it still brought a sense of joy and fun to a strange and scary time in history. Come learn more and try your hand at our Dadaist art collage!
