A Week @ the Museum Summer Camps 2023

FUNdamentally Fabulous

Adding the FUN in the fundamentals of art in all genres from drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. Make it fabulous. Find fundamentals in nature and art forms and find ways to focus your findings in art!

Throughout the week camp participants will explore our exhibits, including Body Language: Reawakening Cultural Tattooing of the Northwest and gain inspiration for creating their own artwork.

Looking for Single Days? We offer single day camp options for $50/day. Register online for single days here or for double-days August 1 & 2 here (art project is 2-day requirement). Call us at 587-797-4040 to inquire.

Payment is due at the time of registration. *If you are in need of making payment arrangements to help your child(ren) attend any of our camps, please contact us prior to registering. This week-long camp runs July 31-August 5, 2023 with single days on 31, Aug 4 & 5. Double-days Aug 1-2.

Art Project List for week/single days:

MONDAY 31st -CD Wind Chimes!

Campers will use elements of shape, craft, recycling and making to create a windchime out of CDS, string and beads!

TUESDAY 1st/WEDNESDAY 2nd (two day process) -Wired Up In Space!

Campers will create wire nylon sculptures and learn about galaxies and nebulas which will inspire our sculptural creations!

THURSDAY 3rd -Reflective Vases & Pocket Pokemon!

Campers will make clay drop pots and use recycled CDS and beads to decorate them and paint them with iridescent paints, plus be taught the art of origami along with its history to create little pocket pokemon buddies they can carry in their pockets! Guest Artist Holly Mayoh with her mystery project!

FRIDAY 5thPaintball Galaxy!

Campers will mix paint and water using water balloons and paint water guns to create a galaxy as a team on a large canvas outside working on target practice, splatter art and movement in art!

Meteor Shower Watercolours! Campers will use pastels, salt and watercolours to create an alien flying into space, learning colour mixing, reactions and character drawing!

Linear Layers

Art speaks with lines, patterns and colours. Did you know art can portray ideas and stories? Search for stories in art and objects that inspire you. What ideas are you trying to portray in your art?

Art Project List for week/single days:

MONDAY 24th – Mural Madness!

Campers will create a teamwork mural with prompts from the leaders. Campers will use a variety of materials and paints to work as a team with music and dancing! Garden watercolours! Campers will harvest and collect leaves and other plants outside and learn a simple way to print make on their watercolour paper!

TUESDAY 25th – Mirror Me!

Campers will try exercises of blind contour drawings in pastels and watercolours to layer portraits of themselves and experiment with line and colour, while creating silly and exciting abstract portraits paintings. Collage Hybrid Cards! Campers will use collage to create hybrid animal human creatures to make cards to be used for any silly occasion!

WEDNESDAY 26th/ THURSDAY 27th (two day process) – Cardboard Rock Band!

Campers will create musical groups where they will learn to build their own instruments out of cardboard such as a guitar, and microphone in 3D! Then they will get to play karaoke with their instruments! Guest Artist Holly Mayoh with her mystery project!

FRIDAY 28th – Piggyback Paintings!

Campers will learn about landscape painting in pairs where they will switch canvases back and forth helping each other create paintings, while learning about teamwork, space, composition and impressionism artists of the past! Create meaningful and fun masks with paper mache and recycling milk jugs! Focusing on history, tradition and symmetry and of course getting messy and creative!

Culturally Creative

Learn from other cultures how they create art in a meaningful way. Be creative in learning a variety of cultural art styles and stories.

Throughout the week camp participants will explore our exhibits, including Body Language: Reawakening Cultural Tattooing of the Northwest and gain inspiration for creating their own artwork.

BONUS: This week campers will watch the Westerner Days Parade on Wednesday, July 19th!

Art Project List for week/single days:

MONDAY 17th – Rockin Animals!

Learn about historical indigenous cave paintings and artefacts in Alberta! Then campers will create their own rock paintings with animals on them with acrylic paints!

TUESDAY 18th – MAG Parade Van!

Working with paper and creativity campers will create decorations to go on the MAG’s parade van! Using materials such as tissue paper, yarn, construction paper, streamers and other miscellaneous materials! Create decorations for the Westerner Day parade van with the help of our guest artist Holly Mayoh.

WEDNESDAY 19th – Westerner Parade! 

Watch the parade from behind the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery and look for the camper decorated MAG parade van!

THURSDAY/FRIDAY 20th-21st Masking Mates! (two day process).

Create meaningful and fun masks with paper mache and recycling milk jugs! Focusing on history, tradition and symmetry and of course getting messy and creative!

Expressions

Be expressive in art and play. Express you unique style in art and learn to be expressive in portraying people, places, or things through mark making and storytelling.
