Stones & Bones: Fossils & Geodes

This month’s camps will give kids some hands-on learning about geology & osteology. What do those words mean? Stones and bones, of course! We’ll take a look at some of the Museum’s natural history collection, do some watercolour gem clusters, crack some geodes, paint some amazing animal skulls, and more!

Children will create their own artwork. Supervised outdoor time is also included, as well as time to explore our galleries and Remarkable Red Deer.

Celebrating Red Deer: 50th Anniversary of the MAG

We’ve got all sorts of fun planned for the Red Deer Museum’s 50th Anniversary! Celebrate our history with some of our favourite projects from the Museum’s past, draw some historical buildings, and try your hand at making some art in the style of a well-known local printmaker!

Portraits and Stories: Artist Portraits

How do we see ourselves? What shapes how we see other people? Our Day Camp this month will focus on narratives and identity – come make an abstract self portrait, create your very own tiny magazine about any topic you’d like to share your expertise in, and make up some fun stories with fellow campers!

The Best of: The Art of Bees and Seaweed

Join us for a fun filled day of The Best of activities and projects from our summer camps!

Our current exhibits focus on art and biology. Participants will look at plants and bugs as inspiration to create art. One of the projects we will work on today is mini under the sea worlds!

Children will create their own artwork. Supervised outdoor time is also included, as well as time to explore our galleries and Remarkable Red Deer.

Please provide your own lunch & snacks, and bring appropriate outdoor clothing (including a bathing suit + towel for the spray park, weather permitting)

Although we frequently make an effort to use recycled materials here at the MAG, this month it will be a special focus in the art we create! Campers will learn how to make natural dyes using vegetables and fruits, make nature prints using leaves and mushrooms, and sculpt with all sorts of second-hand materials such as scrap wood and cardboard.

Let’s go for an underwater adventure! Our art projects this month will focus on undersea creatures and landscapes. We’ll take a look at Lyndal Osborne’s exhibit in the galleries, draw inspiration from her work to make some amazing coral-themed sculptures, and paint some shiny foil fish!
